Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before booking a private sailing trip in the Mediterranean. Our professional skippers answer the most common questions about private sailing in the Mediterranean honestly — from safety and seasickness to what’s included and how to book. If you don’t find your answer here, get in touch directly. Private sailing in the Mediterranean should feel straightforward from the very first question.
Can I do this?
Do I need to know how to sail?
Not at all. Your skipper handles everything — navigation, sails, anchoring, docking. You don’t need to touch a rope unless you want to.
Many guests discover they want to learn. Our skippers are also professional instructors, and an Odyssey is one of the best ways to pick up sailing — at sea, in real conditions, with no pressure. Whether you want to participate fully, sit back entirely, or find somewhere in between, the boat adapts to you.
What if I get seasick?
Seasickness has a physical component, but also a psychological one — apprehension and uncertainty amplify it. Making you feel genuinely safe and at ease is our first priority from the moment you step on board.
The Mediterranean is calm and a sailboat’s motion is smoother than most expect. Most guests who worried beforehand find it simply doesn’t materialise. Bringing medication for the first day or two costs nothing and lets you relax completely.
Is it safe? What if the weather turns?
Safety is the one thing we never compromise on. Your skipper monitors forecasts continuously — if a planned leg isn’t right, we find a better option. The Mediterranean has predictable seasonal patterns and sheltered anchorages within easy reach. You’re in experienced, professional hands.
Can children come?
Yes — and they often become the most enthusiastic crew members on board. Life jackets are provided for all ages; please give us the age and weight of each child at booking so we can prepare properly. For very young children, we can usually rig safety netting — but this depends on the vessel and should be discussed before confirming.
Kids take to boat life quickly: swimming off the stern, helping with sails, falling asleep to the sound of water.
What actually happens?
What does a day on board actually look like?
Every day is discussed openly, shaped by conditions, energy, and what you feel like. Your skipper lays out the options — what the wind is doing, what’s reachable, what’s worth seeing — and you decide together.
That might mean a long sail to a remote anchorage, a swim in a bay unreachable by road, renting scooters to find a monastery, or catching a sunset from the top of an island. Local restaurants and taverns are always on the radar. Dolphins are not guaranteed. Everything else is pretty much à la carte.
Is the itinerary fixed in advance?
Deliberately not. We talk through your interests before departure and your skipper builds each day around conditions and mood. Weather shapes the route too — and that’s a feature, not a bug. The start and end ports are confirmed. Everything in between is beautifully open.
How does food work on board?
Main provisions are ordered online and delivered at check-in. You top up at local markets along the way — which is half the pleasure. Finding good places to eat ashore is always front of mind; your skipper will suggest, adapt, and occasionally insist — in the best possible way.
Where do we sleep?
On board, every night, in your own private cabin. Hot showers, a proper galley, generous deck space. Marinas offer shore facilities and harbour energy; anchorages offer something harder to describe — a still bay, no sound except water, the sea entirely to yourselves. Most guests tell us the anchorages are what they remember most.
Who’s on board?
Will there be other people we don’t know on board?
Never. Every Lanselle Odyssey is private — the boat is yours, exclusively, for your group. No strangers, no shared departures. One week, one boat, your people.
Who typically books an Odyssey?
Friend groups who finally made it happen — then made it a yearly habit. Families after a real shared experience, not a resort. People who travel thoughtfully and are tired of travelling predictably.
What they have in common: they want a story worth telling, not a packaged product. They come back. That’s our measure of whether we did our job.
What does it cost?
What’s included in the price?
The base price covers the boat, skipper, accommodation on board, fuel, and marina fees. Food, drinks, and meals ashore are yours to manage along the way — flexible and personal to your group. No hidden charges. Clear breakdown before you book.
What are we looking at per person?
From around €1,000 per person for a week, depending on route, boat, and season. Shared between six to eight people, an Odyssey becomes a genuinely accessible week — and one with considerably more to show for it than a comparable hotel stay. Get in touch for a real figure for your dates and group.
What if we need to cancel?
Life happens. Cancellation terms are explained clearly before you book — no small print surprises. We strongly recommend travel insurance; it protects your investment and covers things outside anyone’s control.
Is this for me?
We’re not “sailing people.” Is this still for us?
Especially for you. The Mediterranean is a sea place — its most extraordinary spots were built around the water. Arriving by sea changes everything: you reach places inaccessible by road, see coastlines from the angle they were meant to be seen, and step ashore somewhere tour buses will never find. Sailing is the means. That perspective is the point.
How comfortable is it? What kind of boat?
You choose. A performance monohull sits closer to the water — more responsive, a more physical sailing experience. A catamaran offers more deck space, greater stability, and a more social layout. Both are proper sailing; the feel is different. We’ll help you find the right match for your group.
Practicalities
What should we bring?
Less than you think. Soft bags only — rigid suitcases don’t fit in cabin storage. Light layers for evenings, swimwear, good sunscreen, soft-soled non-marking shoes for on deck. Your skipper sends a full packing list before departure. When in doubt, pack light — there’s always a market along the way.
How do we book?
We start with a conversation — phone, WhatsApp, or email, whichever suits you. No booking form, no checkout flow. We want to understand your group and your dates, and make sure we can deliver it properly. If it’s a good fit, we confirm and hold your dates with a deposit.
Do you speak our language?
English, French, and Spanish — all equally at home on board. Mixed groups, no problem.
