When to sail the Saronic Gulf?

The short answer: mid-May to mid-June, or late June. The Saronic is the most sheltered of the grounds we sail — a hard day starts there at just 15.4 knots, against 24.3 in the neighbouring Cyclades. Here the question is not avoiding wind, it is finding some.

A gulf where the problem is the opposite

The Saronic is shielded from the meltemi by the Peloponnese and Attica. Across 26 summers, the strongest wind peak recorded there is below what passes for a steady breeze in the Cyclades. In exchange, up to 37 % of days fall under 7.7 knots depending on the week: that is flat calm, engine required to hold a schedule.

The wind here is thermal rather than synoptic: it gets up in the early afternoon and drops in the evening. That shapes the sailing day — you leave early to arrive before the breeze builds, or you leave after lunch to use it.

The one month when the Saronic wakes up

The gulf’s worst week is 7-13 August, at 1.7 times the norm. That is when the meltemi, at its Aegean maximum, spills over Attica and reaches into the gulf. Nothing dramatic by Greek standards, but it is the week an inexperienced crew will feel the difference.

Note too that the summer of 2026 was unusually windy there: eleven hard days against an average of 6.4. One summer does not make a trend, but it is a reminder that an average is not a guarantee.

How these figures are produced

Hourly ERA5 reanalysis over 26 summers (2000-2025) at an open-sea point, calibrated against stations that actually measure — the AEMET, Météo-France and NOAA networks. The “hard day” threshold is the local 95^th percentile, never a shared value: 15.4 knots here. The comparison is made on ranks, not on knots, because the gap between measured and modelled gusts ranges from half a knot to thirty-one depending on the coast.

One caveat, because it matters: this index measures frequency, not severity. A week rated very calm can still hold the worst day of the decade.
