The short answer: 19 June to 2 July. Southern Sardinia is shielded from the mistral by the bulk of the island — a hard day starts there at 20 knots, against 25.1 in the Strait of Bonifacio 200 miles north. But mid-May is as bad here as in the Balearics.

Risk index: ×1.0 = the area’s own summer average. “Summers affected” counts, out of 26, how many summers actually saw a hard day in that slot — below 4, it is an accident, not a regime. Sea in °C (2023-2025 average), daylight in hours.

The island’s shadow

The mistral that sweeps the Strait of Bonifacio reaches the south much weakened: the whole Sardinian relief stands in the way. The result is a hard-day threshold of 20 knots and a season that is gentler overall than on the island’s east coast.

The trap is the same as everywhere in the western basin: the week of 15 to 21 May is the worst of the summer, at two and a half times the norm. Five of our ten Mediterranean areas put their risk peak on that same week — the Mediterranean switches to its summer regime later than people assume.

How these figures are produced

Hourly ERA5 reanalysis over 26 summers (2000-2025) at an open-sea point, calibrated against stations that actually measure — the AEMET, Météo-France and NOAA networks. The “hard day” threshold is the local 95th percentile, never a shared value: 20.0 knots here. The comparison is made on ranks, not on knots, because the gap between measured and modelled gusts ranges from half a knot to thirty-one depending on the coast.

One caveat, because it matters: this index measures frequency, not severity. A week rated very calm can still hold the worst day of the decade.

Frequently asked questions

Is South Sardinia windy?

Less than the north of the island. The hard-day threshold is 20 knots there against 25.1 in the Strait of Bonifacio. The trade-off is slightly more calm at the height of summer.
